Doppler ultrasound scan
What is Doppler ultrasound scan?
A Doppler Ultrasound Scan (also known as color Doppler ultrasound) is a medical imaging technique to assess the blood flow in your body by using sound waves. The Doppler ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive procedure that does not involve ionizing radiation, making it an important tool in the diagnosis of various diseases. In order to provide detailed information on the flow and health of the blood vessels, it is usually performed in conjunction with traditional ultrasound imaging.
What are the Reasons, When Doctors Recommend Colour Doppler Test?
Doctors may recommend a color Doppler test for a variety of medical reasons, primarily to assess blood flow and vascular health. This type of test provides real-time visual and color-coded information about blood flow patterns, helping doctors diagnose and monitor various conditions. Here are some common reasons why doctors might recommend a color Doppler test at our Dr Shairy ultrasound center in gurugram:
1. Pregnancy Monitoring:
To monitor blood flow in the placenta and umbilical cord during pregnancy, helping to assess fetal well-being and development.
2. Kidney and Liver Health assessment :
To examine blood flow in the renal arteries (supplying the kidneys) and the hepatic veins (draining the liver) for conditions like renal artery stenosis and liver disease.
3. vascular disease Assessment :
To evaluate blood flow in arteries and veins and detect conditions such as atherosclerosis (narrowing and hardening of blood vessels), peripheral artery disease (PAD), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and varicose veins.
4. Stroke Risk Assessment:
To evaluate blood flow in the carotid arteries in the neck, which can help identify plaque buildup and assess the risk of stroke.
5. Assessment of Tumors:
To determine the blood flow patterns in tumors, aiding in the diagnosis and characterization of various types of tumors, including solid tumors and vascular lesions.
6. Blood Clot Detection:
To identify the presence and location of blood clots (thrombosis) in veins or arteries, which is crucial for timely treatment.
7. Venous Insufficiency:
To evaluate blood flow in leg veins and assess for conditions like chronic venous insufficiency and venous ulcers.
8. Monitoring Surgical Procedures:
To assess blood flow after surgical procedures involving blood vessels, such as vascular bypass surgery.
9. Assessment of Aneurysms:
To examine blood flow in blood vessel aneurysms, helping to monitor their size and potential risk of rupture.
10. Raynaud's Phenomenon:
To study blood flow in the fingers and toes to diagnose and monitor conditions like Raynaud's phenomenon.
11. Orthopedic Conditions:
To assess blood flow in joints and soft tissues, aiding in the diagnosis of conditions like synovitis and certain types of arthritis.
12. Diabetes Complications:
To evaluate blood flow in the lower extremities and detect complications associated with diabetes, such as peripheral neuropathy and diabetic foot ulcers.
13. Cardiac Assessment:
To assess blood flow within the heart, including the chambers, valves, and major blood vessels. This can help diagnose conditions such as heart valve disorders, congenital heart defects, and cardiomyopathies.

How does a Doppler ultrasound work?
The following method are frequently performed during a Doppler ultrasound at our centre:
- Your body part that is being tested will be exposed as you lay on a table.
- Radiologist will apply a specific gel on the skin there.
- A transducer, which resembles a wand, will be moved by the provider over the region.
- Your body receives sound waves from the apparatus.
- The pitch of the sound waves changes as a result of blood cell movement. During the operation, you can hear swishing or pulse-like noises.
- The waves are captured and shown on a monitor as images or graphs.
- The healthcare professional will wipe the gel off your body once the exam is over.
- It takes between 30 and 60 minutes to finish the test.
Are there any risks to the colour Doppler test?
The use of a Doppler ultrasonography is not known to have any dangers. Additionally, it is regarded as secure when pregnant. Additionally, we keep an eye on each step of the color Doppler test procedure at our center.
